The Shiv Sena, BJP and the Republican Party of India (RPI) have declared that they will support the people’s bandh on May 31 to demand a rollback of the petrol price hike.
“People want a bandh against the petrol price hike and inflation. We are only appealing people to support the bandh to make it a success,” said senior Shiv Sena leader and MLA Subhash Desai in Mumbai on Tuesday, where he spoke alongside BJP state president Sudhir Mungantiwar and RPI (Athavale) leader Arjun Dangle.
The three parties stressed that they have not called for a bandh but are merely “appealing” to the people to organise a bandh to “express their anger” against the petrol price hike and inflation.
In 2004, the Bombay high court had imposed a fine of Rs 20 lac on the Sena and BJP for calling a bandh.
The two parties have appealed against the verdict and the case is pending in the Supreme Court, though they have already deposited Rs20 lakh each with the state government as ordered by the apex court.
Meanwhile, ithe Sharad Rao-led Hind Mazdoor Sabha, which claims to have a membership of over 2 crore workers across the country, has decided against participating in the May 31 all India bandh declared in protest against the petrol price hike.
“We will be having conferences across the city to decide on the future course in our long struggle against government policies. There is no point in getting involvedwith political parties who only want power and give no assurance that there will be no hikes in future,” said Sharad Rao.
